The history of Mercedes-Benz

Today we are looking at the history of Mercedes-Benz. Today, it is hard to imagine the roads without the Stuttgart-based company’s cars. But it was a long road with many ups and downs before the car became a global success. It is not possible to say exactly when the first automobile was developed, as the first vehicles that could be driven without muscle power were invented as early as the 17th century. However, the Benz Patent Motor Car Number 1 is considered to be the first practical automobile.

Carl Benz – a pioneer in the history of the automobile

When Carl Benz (originally Karl Benz) developed the first car with an internal combustion engine in 1885, he was initially ridiculed. Many did not believe that his invention would catch on. Today it is obvious that Benz was right.

After many years of attempts, which were often not crowned with success, he succeeded in building a well-functioning engine for the first time in 1879. He then founded the Benz & Cie. gas engine factory in Mannheim in 1883. After he applied for a patent for his invention in 1886, it was his wife, Bertha Benz, who helped the car to become better known in 1888 with a trip to Pforzheim, 104 kilometers away. Today, the Bertha Benz Memorial Route commemorates the route she traveled. With her tour, Bertha Benz finally proved the practicality of the car.

When Carl Benz was allowed to present his invention at the Paris World Exhibition in 1889, the vehicle attracted a great deal of attention. Thus began the triumphal march of the automobile, which Carl Benz, who died in 1929, lived to see.

Gottlieb Daimler – pioneer of the automotive industry

Alongside Carl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler is one of the most important personalities in the history of the automobile. The engine with glow tube ignition that he developed together with Wilhelm Maybach formed the basis for the engine of the Benz Patent Motor Car developed by Carl Benz. Daimler also developed the first motorcycle, the Reitwagen, together with Maybach in 1885.

A legal dispute arose over the Gottlieb Daimler invention used by Carl Benz. As a result, Benz & Cie had to pay license fees to Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. Although the two inventors lived not far from each other (Benz near Mannheim and Daimler near Stuttgart), they never met. Although they met in 1897 when the Central European Motor Car Association was founded, they did not want to talk to each other. When Gottlieb Daimler died in 1900, the automobile was yet to achieve its greatest successes.

Where does the name Mercedes come from?

The name Mercedes, which was used for the vehicles of Gottlieb Daimler and later Daimler-Benz AG, goes back to the daughter of the Austro-Hungarian diplomat and automobile racing driver Emil Jellinek. He had named his Daimler vehicle after his daughter and thus made it famous. In order to profit from this, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft registered the name Mercedes as a trademark. This is why the cars produced by Daimler-Benz AG, which later emerged from a merger, are still sold under the name Mercedes Benz today.

Daimler-Benz AG – the foundation of a global corporation

Daimler-Benz AG was formed in 1926 from the merger of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft with Benz & Cie. At this time, many German car manufacturers were experiencing difficulties, which is why Daimler-Benz AG was founded, which has since been renamed Daimler AG. After the merger, the company quickly enjoyed great success. After the National Socialists seized power in 1933, the construction of engines and vehicles for the German military became more important and soon accounted for the majority of production. Only a few Daimler plants were destroyed during the Second World War. At this time, the company wrote a dark chapter in its history when concentration camp prisoners, prisoners of war and other forced laborers were used in the Daimler-Benz-AG plants for production.

After the Second World War, Daimler-Benz concentrated more on building automobiles again and developed various safety features for cars that are still important today. After a less than successful merger with Chrysler in 1998, Daimler and Chrysler split up again in 2007. Since then, the car manufacturer has operated under the name Daimler AG.

Of course, we are only offering an insight into the history of Mercedes Benz, which fills entire books. Even better than reading about the history is experiencing it for yourself. You can do this in a museum or by driving a historic vehicle yourself. Various models and all associated spare parts can be found in our online store.

A visual highlight: front ornamentation for the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL

Mercedes Benz 190 SL grey from the side perspective

Classic car fans know that the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is based on the 180 model and was once developed as an elegant touring roadster for the top ten thousand. The year was 1954 when the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL with its unmistakable hood was presented to an enthusiastic public. Under this beautiful hood was a completely newly developed 1.9-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with no less than 105 hp, which took the car from 0 to 100 km/h in around 14 seconds and achieved a top speed of up to 170 km/h. The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL was not only a fantastic convertible, but could also be purchased as a coupé with a removable hardtop.

An eye-catcher: the front ornament of the Mercedes 190 SL

For all these reasons, the car is still an absolute specialty today and, above all, a lucrative investment. This makes it all the more important to preserve the value of this classic car. This applies in particular to the perfect outfit, which also includes its front ornamentation.

Stainless steel is more durable

In the past, the front ornamentation for the Mercedes 190 SL was chrome-plated, but today stainless steel is increasingly being used. Visually, the difference is barely noticeable. The reason is obvious, because stainless steel is much more durable and does not rust. This means that scratches on stainless steel can be polished away yourself, and drivers can even remove small dents themselves. Chrome-plated nose decorations, on the other hand, have to be re-chromed again and again at great expense. However, the stainless steel nose trim for the Mercedes 190SL is no longer original.

What you should know

However, the cross struts and star are only available as originals, which is why a set only consists of the lower and upper frame. A very good condition of the bodywork is essential for a perfect fit. The unchromed replica of a front ornament for the Mercedes 190SL consists of four parts: Lower part, upper part and the left and right side parts. Visit our well-stocked online store.

220 S braking device – safely on the road with a classic car

Functioning brakes are the be-all and end-all when it comes to driving safely on the road. A faulty or worn braking device puts yourself and other road users in danger. But even if an accident caused by worn brake discs or a malfunctioning brake unit only results in damage to the bodywork, this can lead to high costs and a great deal of time and effort, especially in a classic car like the 220 S from Mercedes Benz, which is why it is worth carrying out maintenance for the 220 S braking device at regular intervals.

The 220 S braking device in particular, which is one of the most complicated safety components, should be checked regularly. The wear and tear on this braking device is gradual. Many drivers do not immediately notice that their braking system is no longer fully functional. They get used to the ever-increasing pedal pressure and the longer braking distance.

Finding the right spare parts for classic cars is usually relatively difficult. Drivers of vintage Mercedes Benz cars have it very easy by comparison. The niemöller online store offers a large selection of spare parts for Mercedes passenger cars built between 1946 and 1975.

The 220 S braking device, for example, can also be purchased here. Individual components can also be replaced in the brake unit for the 220 S, which can also be purchased in the niemöller online store. On the overview page for the Mercedes 220S, model 180.010, you can see an exploded view which you can use to find the required spare part for the 220 S braking device, even without the exact part number.

Mercedes 190 SL – a classic that not only makes classic car enthusiasts shine

The Mercedes 190 SL is one of the first series from Mercedes with a self-supporting body. Built from 1955, the 190 SL is a touring sports car that was already very popular at the time. Equipped with a more powerful engine than its predecessor, the 180, and slightly upgraded on the inside, it also stood out on the outside. In addition to the hub caps 190 sl, on which the Mercedes star was significantly larger, the visual changes included front hinged windows, large rear lights, a slightly wider radiator grille and longer trim strips, which were now also to be found on the underside of the windows. The 190 SL was fitted with thirteen-inch wheels with spoke hubcaps, also available as small hubcaps with decorative rings.

hub caps for the mercedes sl 190

Hub caps are generally an issue that should not be underestimated for classic cars. Minor changes to the bodywork are usually only noticed by the TÜV and specialists, just like changes to the interior. However, if the vehicle is on the wrong wheels with hubcaps that do not match the model, even a layman interested in classic cars can see that something is wrong. No matter how well-maintained the vehicle may be, in absolutely perfect condition – if the tires don’t match, the whole good impression is destroyed.

In contrast to many other classic cars from this period, the use of original hubcaps on the 190 SL not only leads to a certain, but even to a noticeable increase in value. They restore the vehicle to the splendor of the past and perfect it.

There are a number of stores on the Internet that specialize in either restoring the hubcaps of classic cars to their original condition or selling restored hubcaps. Original models can also often be found at classic car fairs, at meetings and in fan clubs, some in need of restoration, others in very good condition. Smaller garages also often have treasures for classic cars in the back corners of their warehouses that the owners have long since forgotten – if you have the opportunity to browse here, you can sometimes find parts that were no longer available, from spare parts for the engine, brakes and lights to tires, rims and hubcaps.

Attention hobby mechanics!

Do you restore a classic car in your spare time? Then you’re probably familiar with this! Whenever you need a certain small part (e.g. the sealing ring for the inlet valve) for installation, you can’t find it. Something like that can spoil the fun of wrenching.

Open-fronted storage boxes with indoor storage boxes

You can avoid this in future with an open-fronted storage box. The open-fronted storage box saves space and with the matching inner storage box you can keep your workshop tidy. The open-fronted storage box from Niemöller is made of corrugated cardboard (quality 1.30) and can be easily stacked on top of each other. The sides of the open-fronted storage box are slightly slanted towards the front so that you have easy access to the small classic car parts, even if several boxes are stacked on top of each other.

The open-fronted storage box can be subdivided several times using the inner storage boxes. This means that screws of different sizes can be stored separately in one open-fronted storage box. The inner storage box is available in several sizes. It is oil and water-repellent on the inside.

The open-fronted storage box is not only suitable for the workshop at home. The open-fronted storage boxes are also suitable for storing presentation documents at trade fairs. They can be folded up in a few simple steps to save space.

Mercedes W108 – Myth of the Mercedes S-Class

The Mercedes W108 is one of the most legendary type series of Mercedes Benz. It was constructed from 1965 to 1972 for prosperous clients. Up to today that car represents the high values of Mercedes Benz vintage cars.

Mercedes S-Class spare partsThe array Mercedes W108 was equipped as standard with a 4 gear manual but Mercedes offered an automatic gearbox for large requirements and more extravagance.

Emphasized by its innovative technics the Mercedes W 108  was able to establish itself on national and international markets. To have the continuing ability to compete against the others on the market, Mercedes Benz started a further development and created a manual transmission with 5 gears for all cars with six cylinder engine. The models 250S and 280S were well equipped and performed between 130 and 140 ps. Later on Mercedes improved its cars and released the SE-versions. They were featured with mechanical injection pumps. While Mercedes Benz was able to reduce fuel consumption, they could increase their performance by 20 ps at the same time.

The interior design is related to high standards as well. Mercedes Benz set a benchmark, which is still in demand today: smooth leather, pure wood and fine blanket.

One of the most famous appearances of the black Mercedes S280 (Series W108) occurred in the movie „James Bond 007-Octopussy“ by EON Productions Ltd. Only after 18 years, in 1983, Bond was authorized to drive this car.

According to the fact of that luxury car in Mercedes Benz history, the myth of famous Mercedes Benz W108 will persist.

Due to the fact that the Mercedes W108 is one of the most popular vintage cars, it is difficult for each owner to find the right spare parts for his beloved car.

Niemoeller is specilized to acquire rare spare parts. We offer a great variety for all Mercedes Benz vintage cars constructed between 1946 and 1975.

Mercedes Braking System

Mercedes Braking Systems – Parts for the Classic Mercedes Benz

Mercedes Benz has been manufacturing cars for over one hundred years. During that time the company has been the innovator in many design changes and upgrades. Automobiles from Mercedes are now known as the best and safest around the world. As models progressed throughout the years Mercedes Benz has continued to be in the forefront of technology.

Of all the automotive systems that have been improved over the years probably none have advanced as much as the braking systems. Earliest cars had mechanical brakes that forced the cars to stop abruptly by causing the wheels to stop turning. While it was very effective in stopping the car, it was also dangerous and provided a rather severe ride. Therefore hydraulic systems were designed and introduced to allow vehicles to slow down while stopping more gradually and in a safer manner.

Mercedes Benz and other manufacturers introduced the first hydraulic braking systems in the early part of the twentieth century. By the mid-twenties cars with four- wheel hydraulic systems were appearing on the market. Mercedes Benz offered these braking systems as a safety feature on its touring cars around this time.

Mercedes Oldtimer braking systemsAs braking systems evolved over time, the number of parts increased greatly. Braking systems are pedal operated; however the pedal in the car really has no direct connection to the apparatus that causes the car to stop. Braking is accomplished when hydraulic fluid is pushed through tubes that connect the fluid reservoir to the shoes or calipers that operate the pads which create friction at each wheel and slow the car down.

Finding parts for old time Mercedes braking systems can be a challenge. The drums, rotors, calipers, drum shoes and hydraulic lines are all vital parts. Many parts are reproduced and others are only available in used or remanufactured parts. Restoration brake parts for Mercedes from the mid-forties through the seventies can be found in the catalogs of Mercedes Benz vintage cars of a German supplier offering new and used parts. A visit to their website; https://www.niemoeller.de/en/mercedes-benz-oldtimer-spare-parts/catalogs , will assist hobbyists and restorers in the search for classic braking parts.
